Monday is Labor Day and as the unofficial end to summer, the long weekend is a great opportunity to celebrate with family. If you are looking for some last-minute, low-cost Labor Day family fun, we have some suggestions for you.
Take a Getaway
This one may require some planning, but a spontaneous getaway can be fun too. Find a nearby city you have always wanted to visit and check the area hotels, bed and breakfasts, or Airbnb for availability. Sometimes, a change of scenery is all you need to re-energize the whole family.

It may seem silly, but sometimes you just need to play tourist in your own city. Make a list of your city’s landmarks and make a day of it. Even if you have lived in your city for several years, it can be fun to visit your tourist spots with a different perspective. Odds are, you will find a new favorite spot you have never been before.
Explore a Local Park
If the weather is nice, take the long weekend to spend some time outdoors. No matter where you live, you are bound to have a couple parks nearby. Load up the family and some goodies for an outdoor picnic and head out to your favorite park or one you haven’t visited before. Let the kids run around in the fresh air and take in the warm weather while it is still here. Some city parks even host free movie nights or concerts, so be sure to check out events in your area.
Go Backyard Camping
If you didn’t have time to book a campsite, why not try backyard camping? Pitch a tent in your yard and enjoy a night (or two) under the stars. The best part? You get to enjoy your own indoor kitchen and bathroom. Even if you don’t have a backyard (or a backyard big enough), let your kids build a fort in the living room using the couch, cushions, and blankets. Pull out one of your favorite movies and enjoy a fun sleepover on the living room floor.
